Composer
Raf KEUNEN
Languages spoken: French - English - Dutch
A Belgian composer active in both the film and audiovisual industries, Raf Keunen primarily composes hybrid music that combines electronic elements with acoustic sounds. The uniqueness of his music stems in part from the extensive sound research he undertakes for each film, allowing him to reinvent himself with every new score. Sensitivity, emotional tension, refined sound textures, and distinctive atmospheres are key elements of his musical signature.
Raf Keunen has a particular flair for dark narratives. In Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, he has found a trusted audiovisual collaborator for whom he has already composed the scores for *Les Vivants*, *Sambre*, *Jeux d’Influence* (S1, S2), and *Laetitia*—bold scores that stand as narratives in their own right. In the Northern European television landscape, he has also composed the scores for the series SAFE HARBOR (created by Mark Williams) and OVER WATER (by Paul Baeten Gronda and Tom Lenaerts).
In the cinema, he is currently featured in another wonderful collaboration with Michael R. Roskam on crime, thriller, and other dramatic films: THE FAITHFUL, WHEN NIGHT FALLS, and BULLHEAD, but he also composes for horror films such as THE ROOM (Christian Volckman) starring Olga Kurylenko, KANDISHA (Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury), and PIOVE (Paolo Strippoli), as well as dramas like LOLA VERS LA MER (Laurent Micheli) and THE SPY (Jens Jonsson). He has also composed music for numerous short films, including COPAIN (Jan and Raf Roosens) and the Japanese films 23:07 and TRACÉ (Olivier Kazuma).
After studying philosophy, Raf Keunen trained in composition and orchestration at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. He began his career as a film composer in 2004 by writing the scores for two short films, *CARLO* and *THE ONE THING TO DO* by Michael R. Roskam, before collaborating with him on the feature film *BULLHEAD*, which launched his career.
